The movie was critically acclaimed for being complex with complex themes that have heavy relevance today with its strong social commentary about class divide, power relations between men and women, corruption in society, inter-caste marriages etc. The movie is critically acclaimed for its exploration of the social structure in India, especially in rural areas. It also deals with the theme of casteism with heavy focus on patriarchy. Saathiya will be viewed as a landmark in Indian cinema when it was made. The movie has received numerous awards including four National Film Awards, nine Filmfare Awards, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography awards at various film festivals around the world. The movie marked the acting debut of Sushmita Sen who won Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her role as Saathiya. The plot is about two young people, Saathiya and Mohit, living together under one roof. However, they are strangers to each other until they start to interact differently with each other after being stuck in a compromising situation. Saathiya is an introverted young woman whereas Mohit is outgoing and friendly. They are both financially dependent on their families who are separated by class divides due to the difference in social status. Their families have oppressive patriarchal values that control women's lives by keeping them enclosed within four walls controlling their behaviour, clothing choices and education. Saathiya suffers from social oppression, upper caste patriarchy and class structure. She is oppressed by both her father and husband, who are conservative and traditional men. Saathiya marries Mohit but remains trapped in the house like a bird in a cage, just like her name suggests. Her husband is cold towards her and he disapproves of Saathiya's family background that is socially inferior to his own. It is a stifling marriage with a physically abusive husband who kicks his wife out of bed in the middle of the night to take care of household work while he spends his time watching TV or going out for parties without concern for his wife's feelings or well being. Mohit spends much of his time away from home with a mistress, a rich city woman called Anu. Both of these women use him to satisfy their own desires and they use his wealth for what they want. The two main characters are also social outcasts because of their differences in social status, class divide and cultural differences that make them very different from the people around them who are more privileged. Saathiya is a poor girl from a lower caste family living in Narmada river valley, the backdrop of the movie is rural India. Most people live in villages working as farmers or workers which is underdeveloped and far from modern day society. cfa1e77820
