Excessively freezing temperatures and snow outside the window only make everything seem even colder and more inaccessible. However, below the 8 inches of snow that accumulates on your car, is a buried layer of ice that won't melt until April. The annoying moment when you come back from work or school to find your car covered in ice is also right around this time, and it feels like all hope is lost. But fear not! There are a number of hacks you can try out to help prevent frostbite and survive the winter months without ever having to scrape the ice off yourself again — we've outlined all of them for you below: 1) Use rubbing alcohol on your windshield to break up any existing ice before it melts. Rubbing alcohol is flammable: use with caution and take extra care not to expose any flames near it. While this requires little preparation, rubbing alcohol only works immediately after the ice forms; if you wait too long, the ice will be impossible to break. 2) Coat your windows in Vaseline at night before going to sleep and wipe off any excess in the morning for an easier scraping experience. Use a lint-free rag and wipe gently — you don't want to scrape your windows too hard because that could damage them. Make sure to find a room that isn't drafty and will stay relatively warm overnight so there is no chance of frost building up on your windows again. 3) Mount a fan in your car, away from any power source. A car air conditioner will create frost at the base of your window, making it difficult to remove without melting all the ice. A fan can be attached to the floor of the car, away from any electrical cords or power sources. This prevents frost buildup on your windows without sacrificing any convenience. 4) Use a hair dryer with low heat setting to melt existing ice. The low heat setting of a hair dryer is great for melting away the edges of ice, but will not provide enough warmth to melt deep ice in front of the windshield glass. 5) Put a layer of newspaper down on the floor and place a towel on top. This trick will help to prevent frost from spreading outside the car and at the same time, keep any excess heat out of your car. Newspaper is flammable, so make sure to store it safely away from electrical cords and do not allow any flames near it as this could cause an explosion (or even fire). And if you're not sure about how comfortable placing your towel on top of the newspaper, we recommend using a jacket or something similar instead. 6) Clear your car with a hose or rake by removing snow with a hose or rake. Items such as newspapers and towels can be used to clear out any excess frost buildup, but the heat from a hose or rake will melt it more quickly.
